Make no mistake the RAF lost so many Spitfires that production and men able to pilot them couldn't keep up. With the help of Radar and some terrible decisions by Hitler Britain remained in the war. We owe today to the "FEW" but don't let this video make you believe it was nothing more than sheer luck and the sacrifices every man and woman gave during the Battle of Britain. It was so, so close. Ultimately the Channel saved us. Good bless everyone that gave their lives for the effort. Thank you. ❤❤❤

What are you on about "production couldn't keep up"? RAF Fighter Command finished the BoB with MORE aircraft including Spitfires than it STARTED WITH !!!. Also How did the English Channel save us in 1940 when it didn;t save us from the Romans, Vikings, Angles, Saxons & Normans? What was it apart from the English Channel that saved us from King Philip II of Spain, Napoleon and Hitler?

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 on reflection i was rather drunk when I sent that message. The RAF did repel the Germans effectively. Radar was of great help and the Germans did inflict a lot of damage. The UK did suffer immensely. Supplies trying to cross the channel were sunk in vast numbers. Germany didn't have the Navel power to control the channel. It was up to the German Airforce to defeat Britain. No help from troops and armoured divisions. No battleships or Cruisers in the channel. Aircraft was the only way to attack. So the channel was a big help in limiting the German attack. So the channel prevented the lighting war of troops, tanks and artillery. Yes?

1:51 There were no Focke Wulf 190s in the Battle of Britain. Already, some of the camera shots are from American aircraft attacking ground targets late in the war. I can see where this is going and I'm baling out, right now.

That's a bit of a stretch " the weakest military in all of Europe" 😂. You do understand that Britain is always in the top 6 of military budget in the world right? You do understand that Britain pays more than any other country into NATO after the US? People used to say Russia was the strongest military in the world. Not even in Europe. Proves numbers mean nothing, as history has proven over and over again.

I don't watch these out of morbid curiosity. I watch them in awe at the bravery of young men some barely out of their teens.Fims like this are so important so that we always remember them and the debt we owe them. Many of them didn't see the end of the war,if only they could have known the pivotal part they played in bringing it to an end and the untold thousands of lives that they saved.

Looks like a mish-mash of footage from various periods and different aircraft types. I have seen most of this footage in other videos attributed to p47s, mustangs, spitfires, p-38's etc. Not taking anything away from the brave pilot's who fought on all fronts...just appreciate historical accuracy.

Not why they were called "Spitfire" (although they obviously did spit fire, from gun ports and exhausts on startup). A "spitfire" was a term for a sharp-tongued woman, probably why R.J. Mitchell thought it was a silly name. More importantly, most of this footage is post-Battle of Britain.

People forget the Spitfire was a purpose built pylon racing plane before the war. That is why the wings are longer and wider and the Merlin engine was the best one made at the time. The US put Merlins in the Mustang three years later. The UK had a full leg -up on Hitler on Day ONE.
